The twelve houses
A kundali is divided into twelve bhavas (houses), each governing a part of life: self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, marriage, longevity, fortune, career, gains and liberation. Which planets sit in which houses — and which signs those houses fall in — shapes the reading.
The ascendant (lagna)
The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth is your lagna, the anchor of the whole chart. Two people born on the same day can have completely different kundalis because the lagna changes roughly every two hours. This is why accurate birth time matters so much in Vedic astrology.
The nine grahas
Vedic astrology works with nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Each has its own nature, friendships and enmities, and each rules particular signs. Their placement, strength and aspects tell the story.
